5 Meditation Methods I Practice Often

When someone says they are anxious or depressed, the most common suggestion they get is to try meditation. I’m sure you might also have received or given the same advice at some point. But although we are so sure meditation will help with mental struggles, most of us are completely clueless about how to meditate. Especially those without a teacher. But I believe nothing is impossible to achieve even with the absence of a teacher. All you need is practice and the right approach, as in meditation methods.

How to meditate?

Concentrate on your breath. Again, a basic answer.

What is important is to calm your mind. Put a pause to the chaotic thoughts in your mind. And to attain that, there are many ways, other than just concentrating on the breath.

If you have tried meditation yet you haven’t found it beneficial or even maybe interesting. Then you have not found your meditation technique. The RIGHT one.

Our mindsets are different, so are our preferences and comforts. Hence the need to find the right meditation method that will work for you. Although I am not an expert on this subject I’ve had my share of experience and techniques that I found quite helpful.

Now I’m going to tell you the five meditation methods I practice. Depending on how I feel that day I choose the method.

Meditation Methods

1. Patterns

The main thing about meditation is to focus all your energy on one object. Let it be your breath or a particular thought, or any other object of your interest.

When you close your eyes you see some colors or patterns, right. So I try to concentrate on what I see in that darkness. And sometimes, I try to make a pattern myself and go over it again and again until I have all my focus in one place.

This helps in times when I have to quickly pull myself together and focus on what I’m doing.

2. The old school

Here comes our most common technique. Concentrating on the breath. It might sound so plain but it’s really hard to contain our wavering minds while doing that. Ever tried?

But the more you practice, the better it becomes. Just 5 or 10 minutes every day is enough to power through the rest of your day.

3. Visions

The next one is creating a vision in your mind with your eyes closed. It might be recreating a happy memory or a new scenario that you desire to make happen.

Out of all the meditation methods, I feel this is more useful as it is almost like building your own future. It gives you happiness, hope, and strength to move forward.

I regularly do this as it makes me feel at peace. Meditation is also about embracing the positive emotions.

4. Feel the air around you

I enjoy this one very much as it heightens my senses. Our minds mostly work depending on the visions we see with our eyes but the moment you close your eyes your other senses kick in and you will feel amazing and more connected with your surroundings and as well as yourself.

Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Feel the air that touches you, the scent that surrounds you, and the sounds you hear.

People usually use essential oils while meditating which helps them concentrate better. I sometimes also put nature sounds in my phone like waves, bird songs, and the wind which allows me to stay calm.

You will feel even better if you can find a nice and quiet outdoor spot to meditate this way.

5.  Positive affirmations

Some chant mantras while meditating, that generates positive energy within you. Sometimes I also chant some positive affirmations to energize myself, to appreciate myself, and to encourage myself. That works too.

So, the point of this whole meditation is to organize your thoughts and focusing on one thing. There may be many other meditation methods as well but these are my go-to choices.
