6 Complementing Habits to Write Better

Writing is difficult. But only when there is a lack of practice. Searching for words, new expressions, grammar, and more. I completely get that because I came from being a non-writer/non-reader to a professional writer/avid reader. It was quite a journey I had. Overwhelming at times, but mostly, fruitful. There was never a day when I didn’t wish to write better. But believe me, it only gets better.

All you need is a lifestyle that complements your writing. You must think I’m crazy to say that you need a lifestyle change to get better at writing. Sorry to burst your bubble, I’m not crazy and that is genuine advice.

“Your actions become thoughts, and they manifest into your outcomes.”

This is not a secret.

What ensures You Write Better?

There might be more but I’m going to share the 6 habits that helped me write better.

1. Speaking

Speaking to a crowd, big or small, helps you write better. Because when you’re speaking you will be connecting your thoughts fast and on spot, and that is going to be helpful in writing as well.

The most common complaint I hear from writers is that they struggle to have a flow of thoughts while writing. Do you see the connection?

So start practising speaking imminently and in no time, you will see the outcome of it. Speaking in front of your mirror is a good start.

2. Learn Writing

Obvious, right?

Yet many writers overlook this.

They don’t learn from an expert. They try on their own and when they don’t see much improvement, they get dejected and quit.

So don’t make that mistake and learn from the right place. This also speeds up your career pace.

3. Listening

When you are quick enough to grasp the nuances while listening, your writing skill gets better too. I know this as I’ve tried it myself.

Audiobooks are great for this exercise. Usually, I prefer reading physical copies but audiobooks help in improving our listening skills. So once in a while, I spend time with a good audiobook. Suggestion — Try audible.

4. Writing by hand

With computers, things definitely are faster and efficient. But sometimes it is good to go back to old-fashioned ways.

Try writing something by hand every day. Perhaps, a journal. It helps in boosting your creativity and flow of thoughts. Just one page or one paragraph, but do it consistently.

5. Daydreaming

Another great way to boost our creativity. Keep your mobile or any distractions at bay and just be still. Let your mind wander into the unknown and beyond.

I like to do this every night before I sleep. It’s my favourite activity. Very few consider thinking/daydreaming a hobby but if you are a writer, then you certainly understand my point here.

6. Reading

The obvious one. Some say that a writer need not be an avid reader. Well, maybe yes, but being one definitely helps a lot.

As writers, how do we feed our minds the right stuff? Through reading. This hobby is a source of abundant writing-related benefits.

You will learn new vocabulary, new expressions, writing styles, enhance imagination, creativity, and a lot more.

And finally, write more.

If you want to write better, you must most definitely write more. It is a fact.

Hope you learned a thing or two about writing from this article. I’ll see you soon again. Until then, keep writing.

Cheers,

Nikki.
