9 Writing Tools to keep your focus together

Writing is something that can’t be forced. It must come naturally and from within. Only then you will be satisfied as a writer and your message will be appreciated by the reader. Because that’s the whole point of this. But we cannot completely depend on motivation alone when we have a deadline to meet, right. That’s where the gamifying concept comes into the picture.

These are the days where we hold so much control over so many things yet be just as much distracted and unmotivated. The most common distraction of all is games. So, why don’t we use the same thing to become productive? Anyhoo, ever thought of gamifying your writing? We enjoy writing as it is but a little game wouldn’t hurt, would it?

There are many ways to make the writing activity more fun and productive.

One, we already talked about, a game.

Two, reward approach.

Three, tracking your progress.

The writing tools I’m about to share with you fall under one or more of these three categories and will be extremely helpful in completing your writing projects on time.

And I also have something to gift you, a free resource on “5 Steps to launch your writing career from scratch” at the end of this article, so stick around until the end.

9 Super Useful Writing Tools

1. Ilys

I just love the concept of Ilys. As writers, we know that sometimes the editor part of us keeps clashing with the writer part. This one takes care of that. Before you start, you set word count goals, and until you reach that number you won’t be able to go back and see what you’ve written. You have no option but to move forward. This stops us from criticizing every word and sentence we’ve written without even finishing it. A major problem when it comes to writing.

So you gotta try this.

2. Bee minder

Another tool that helps you be mindful about your goals. This is not specifically a writing tool but an activity tracker in general. So anybody can use this, including writers.

3. Write or die 2

This is another place that gamifies the whole concept of writing. But it’s not online, you must download the program into your computer. If you write and reach your goals you will be rewarded and if not, you will have to face the consequences. It also has many other features like stimulus, idea generator, etc.

You may wanna check it out yourself.

4. Written? Kitten

I’m writing this piece on ‘written? Kitten’ itself. This will reward you with a cute picture of a kitten for every 100 words written. If you’re not a kitten person, you can change it to a bunny or a puppy. But the essence is the same, a glimpse of cuteness every 100 words. You can even change the word count, you can make it 200, 500, or 1000 words even.

Honestly, for me, I wouldn’t say it’s extremely engaging but it’s good. Again, it’s all personal preferences so see if this is your thing.

5. Reddit writing prompts

I guess you’re on Reddit? If so, you can find much creative writing prompts that will push you to think and write. This is a great place to spend some quality writing time.

6. 750words.com

This is another brilliant way to get the ideas flowing. There’s this whole big idea behind this which you may read on their website. But basically, in there, you are expected to write 750 words every day and this will get you points. The point system is only your reward initially once you make it a habit, you’re there simply to enjoy writing.

That’s not just it, you can also get the analytics for each entry you made that lets you understand your emotion and yourself better.

7. How many syllables

This is not a focus-based tool. This website tells you the number of syllables a word has. We, writers, sometimes need to write something different from what we are comfortable with. For haiku poems, the syllable count is very important and this website will help you in creating beautiful haiku poems with the right number of syllables.

8. Word Webs

Sometimes we cannot focus because of a lack of ideas. This website creates a web of words/topics for any topic of your choice and who knows, it might lead to a bright idea. And we all know when a writer has an idea how focused he/she gets.

9. Habitica

Again, it gamifies your life. I’ve heard good things about it. So, you can see if this is a good fit for your needs.

  1. These tools are motivating for bloggers. I honestly can’t believe that I don’t use any of these tools. Sometimes I start writing but end up feeling lazy, only to realise that one week later I haven’t published my post. 🙄

  2. Nikki,
thanks for this article,i think this article is very relevant to bloggers as well.. I particularly liked the concept of 750wrds.com. I may give it a try as well.

  3. Grammarly is my favorite writing tool because it’s like having your personal proofreader. However, it’s nice to know about these programs that make writing fun through rewards.
